Take one Wegovy pill each morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water. Swallow it whole. Then wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything else, or take other pills. Those are the rules in the FDA prescribing information for Wegovy tablets.
The rules are strict for a reason. The same label says only about 1% to 2% of the semaglutide in the pill gets into your blood, absorbed mostly in your stomach. The weekly Wegovy shot, by contrast, can be taken "at any time of day, with or without meals."

How Long to Wait Before Eating After the Wegovy Pill
At least 30 minutes, for food, any drink and your other pills. The Medication Guide puts it simply: "After 30 minutes, you can eat, drink, or take other oral medicines."
Thirty minutes is the floor. In a study described in the label, "semaglutide absorption [...] was higher after a longer post-dose fasting period." Whether a longer wait makes sense for you is a question for your prescriber.
The same label study found "no clinically significant differences" between 50 mL and 120 mL of water. A separate single-dose study found lower absorption with 240 mL, about a full cup, than with 50 mL. Rybelsus has the same 30-minute rule.
Can You Take the Wegovy Pill With Coffee?
No. The label says "Do not take WEGOVY tablets with other liquids besides water." The manufacturer's Wegovy pill guide names coffee directly: take the pill "at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking beverages like coffee, or taking other oral medications."

Can You Take the Wegovy Pill With Other Medications?
Not at the same time. In a 2021 study of 45 healthy adults, people took oral semaglutide 14 mg, a Rybelsus dose, alone or with five placebo tablets, which contain no drug. With the extra tablets, "A 34% decrease in semaglutide exposure was observed."
It cuts both ways: the Medication Guide says "WEGOVY slows stomach emptying and can affect medicines that need to pass through the stomach quickly. Know the medicines you take."

What Happens If You Don't Take the Wegovy Pill on an Empty Stomach?
Less of the drug gets absorbed, going by the study below. The label doesn't define "empty stomach" in hours, though one of its water studies began after "an 8-hour overnight fast."
A 2023 study of 156 healthy volunteers tested shorter fasts. Compared with an overnight fast, fasting only 2, 4 or 6 hours left roughly 12% to 43% as much semaglutide in the blood. That study used Rybelsus doses (3 mg, then 7 mg), not Wegovy's.

Can I Take the Wegovy Pill at Night?
The label says "in the morning." The 2023 study also tested a 2-hour fast, then the pill, then nothing until morning. Absorption was lower than after an overnight fast. The authors wrote that the results "further support the current prescribing information, which states that patients should take their oral semaglutide dose after an overnight fast."

A Wegovy Pill Morning Routine That Works
- Keep the bottle by your bed with a small cup. The Medication Guide says "Do not store in any other container." We read that as ruling out a weekly pill organizer.
- Take it as soon as you get up. The manufacturer's guide says "Take it right when you get out of bed."
- Start a 30-minute clock. Get dressed.
- Then coffee, breakfast and other pills. If one of them is levothyroxine, ask your prescriber which order to use.
