There is no single answer, and the spread is bigger than most people expect. Amoxicillin has a half-life of about one hour. Azithromycin has one of 68 hours. Both numbers come from their FDA labels. So the honest answer is that it depends entirely on which antibiotic you took.

That is a 66x gap between the fastest and the slowest. Any article that gives you one number for "antibiotics" is answering a question you did not ask.
Amoxicillin: gone in hours
The FDA label for amoxicillin is unusually precise. It states that "The half-life of amoxicillin is 61.3 minutes."
It also says that "Approximately 60% of an orally administered dose of amoxicillin is excreted in the urine within 6 to 8 hours," and that "Detectable serum levels are observed up to 8 hours after an orally administered dose."
Now look at how amoxicillin is prescribed. Two or three times a day, every day, without gaps. That is not arbitrary. With a one hour half-life, the blood level falls off fast, so the schedule exists to keep it topped up.

Doxycycline: a few days
The FDA label for doxycycline lists a "Half-Life: 16.33 hr (± 4.53 sd)" and elsewhere describes a "serum half-life of doxycycline (range 18-22 hours)."
That lands doxycycline in the middle, and it is why once or twice daily dosing works. Full clearance takes a few days after your last capsule.
One detail from the same label matters if your kidneys are not at full function. It states that "Excretion of doxycycline by the kidney is about 40%/72 hours in individuals with normal function," and that this "may fall as low as 1-5%/72 hours in individuals with severe renal insufficiency." Azithromycin: the outlier, and the reason your Z-Pak is short
Azithromycin is the one that surprises people. The FDA label gives it a "terminal elimination half-life of 68 hr."
The label also explains why. It states that "The prolonged terminal half-life is thought to be due to extensive uptake and subsequent release of drug from tissues," and that "Azithromycin has been shown to penetrate into human tissues."
That sentence answers a question people ask constantly without realizing it is the same question. If a Z-Pak is only five days, how does it treat an infection that takes longer than five days to clear? Because the drug parks itself in tissue and keeps releasing after you stop swallowing pills. The course is short precisely because the drug is long.
Same logic, opposite direction, as amoxicillin. The half-life wrote the schedule.
Why people actually ask this question
Almost nobody asks out of curiosity. There is usually a plan behind it.
- "When can I drink?" This is the most common reason, and it is not really a clearance question for most antibiotics. The thing the half-life does not tell you
Clearing the drug and finishing the course are two completely different things.
The half-life tells you when the medicine leaves. It says nothing about whether the bacteria are gone. Stopping early is how partially treated infections come back, and it does not matter whether you stopped because you felt better or because you did the clearance math.
