Left Unopened Ozempic Out of the Fridge? What the Maker Says

Published
October 21, 2026
Key Takeaways
  • Unopened Ozempic left out of the fridge can still be used if it stayed between 36°F and 86°F, according to Novo Nordisk's medical information. Check that the liquid is clear and colorless.
  • Once a new pen has been above 46°F, Novo Nordisk says it must be used or thrown away within 56 days. The safest way to count is from the day it was left out.
  • A pen in use can be kept at room temperature (59°F to 86°F) or in the fridge. The FDA label says to throw it away after 56 days, even if medicine is left.
  • Do not use Ozempic that was frozen or exposed to temperatures above 86°F. A parked car on a sunny day can get that hot fast.
  • If a mailed box arrives warm or without enough cold packs, the FDA advises not using it. Call the pharmacy about a replacement.

If your unopened Ozempic was left out of the fridge but stayed between 36°F and 86°F, it can still be used, according to Novo Nordisk's medical information. Once it has been above 46°F, it has a deadline: use it or throw it away within 56 days. If it got colder than 36°F or hotter than 86°F, do not use it. Either way, check that the liquid is clear and colorless.

That rule is on the GLP-1 storage page of Novo Nordisk's medical information site, written for U.S. healthcare professionals. If Ozempic "was exposed to non-refrigerated temperatures (any temperature above 46 °F), the product must be used or discarded within 56 days." The everyday rule is in the FDA label on DailyMed: keep a new pen in the fridge until first use.

Unopened Ozempic Left Out Overnight or for a Few Hours

A new pen sat out overnight, or in a grocery bag for an afternoon? Do this:

  1. Think temperature, not hours. Novo Nordisk's rule has two lines: below 36°F and above 86°F. A normal room sits between them.
  2. Look at the liquid. The label says Ozempic "should appear clear and colorless." Novo Nordisk says to check for "precipitation, or change in color or clarity that may indicate a loss in potency." Cloudy, or you can see particles? Don't use it.
  3. Write the date it was left out on the carton. The safest way to count the 56 days is from that day, not the day you first inject. Your pharmacist can confirm the date.
  4. You can put it back in the fridge, where the label says new pens belong. The 56-day limit still applies. Keep it in its carton and, as the label says, "away from heat and out of the light."

Ozempic Left Out of the Fridge for Days or a Week

A pen that sat out for three days, or a week, at normal room temperature is still inside Novo Nordisk's 56 days. Count those days against the 56.

Weeks or months are different. If the pen has been out of the fridge for more than 56 days, it is past Novo Nordisk's use-or-discard limit. Don't use it. Ask your pharmacy about a replacement.

If the new pen won't arrive before your dose day, the label's missed-dose rule applies: "administer OZEMPIC as soon as possible within 5 days after the missed dose. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and administer the next dose on the regularly scheduled day." If you're not sure how this applies to you, ask your pharmacist or prescriber. Our missed Ozempic dose guide has the details.

Not sure how warm it got? Ask your pharmacist instead of guessing. The Ozempic Instructions for Use also list Novo Nordisk at 1-888-693-6742.

How Many Weeks Does an Ozempic Pen Last?

Each pen holds a set number of injections, listed in the label's How Supplied section. Here is when each one runs out with one shot a week, starting on day 1. (This explains the 56-day rule, not how much to take. Your prescriber sets your dose.)

PenInjections it holds (label)Weekly use ends onSkipped weeks that still fit before day 56
0.25 mg / 0.5 mg pen (2 mg/3 mL)4 of 0.25 mg and 2 of 0.5 mg, or 4 of 0.5 mgDay 36 (6 injections) or day 22 (4 injections)2 (6 injections) or 4 (4 injections)
1 mg pen (4 mg/3 mL)4 of 1 mgDay 224
2 mg pen (8 mg/3 mL)4 of 2 mgDay 224

Two things can make day 56 arrive before the pen is empty. One is skipped weeks: illness, travel, or a restart after a break can push the last shot past day 56, so plan any break in doses with your prescriber.

The other is days the pen sat out before you started it. If you count from the day it was left out, those days come off the front. Say a new 1 mg pen sat out for 40 days. That leaves 16 days, enough for 3 weekly shots, not 4.

The label says to throw an in-use pen away "after 56 days, even if it still has OZEMPIC left in it," and to "Write the disposal date on your calendar."

Why Does Ozempic Need to Be Refrigerated Before First Use?

It feels backward: the fridge matters before first use, then becomes optional.

Novo Nordisk's temperature Q&A says the expiration date for a cold, unused pen and the 56 days at room temperature are both "based on proprietary data generated by Novo Nordisk and approved by regulatory authorities, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."

The fridge is what earns a new pen its long shelf life. The label says unused pens "may be used until the expiration date ("EXP") printed on the label, if kept in the refrigerator." Room temperature works too, just for a shorter, tested window.

Can You Put Ozempic Back in the Fridge?

Yes. For a pen you've started, the label allows storage "at controlled room temperature 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) or in a refrigerator 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F)" during its 56 days. Remove the needle after each shot, and keep the cap on.

For a new pen that sat out, putting it back in the fridge is fine. The 56-day deadline still applies. Where it sits matters: the label says not to store pens "directly next to the cooling element."

Mounjaro has its own rule; our Mounjaro fridge guide covers it.

Ozempic Pen Left in the Car, or Frozen in the Fridge

Too hot. Novo Nordisk's temperature Q&A says, "Do not use if products are exposed to temperatures above 86 °F (30 °C)." A parked car can get there fast. In a study in Pediatrics, a dark sedan on clear, sunny days reached 117°F inside within an hour, even when it was 72°F outside. Most of the rise came in the first 30 minutes. In a study of cars in Arizona summer heat, cars parked in full shade still averaged about 103°F inside. If your pen sat in a parked car on a warm or sunny day, call your pharmacist before using it. For other medicines, see our hot car guide. Flying soon? The Ozempic travel guide covers coolers and airport screening.

Too cold. The label says, "Do not use OZEMPIC if it has been frozen." That holds even if it looks fine after thawing. Novo Nordisk says its products should not be frozen "to prevent loss of potency, clumping, frosting, or precipitation." Home fridges can dip below freezing: in a study of insulin users' fridges, 57 of 230 sensors placed next to the insulin logged below-freezing temperatures at some point.

Ozempic Arrived Warm From the Pharmacy

If the pharmacist handed you a pen that wasn't cold, and you put it in the fridge at home, Novo Nordisk's rule applies. It can be used if it never went below 36°F or above 86°F. If it was above 46°F, it must be used or thrown away within 56 days. Ask the pharmacist how it was stored.

Shipping is a different story. The FDA "recommends patients not use any injectable GLP-1 drug that arrives warm or with insufficient refrigeration, as this can affect the drug's quality." In a 2023 study, ordinary mailed packages spent an average of 68.3% of transit time outside a 68°F to 77°F range, with readings from 5.1°F to 102.3°F. If your box arrives warm or without enough cold packs, the FDA's advice is not to use it. Call the pharmacy about a replacement.

Ozempic Tablets, Prefilled Syringes and Compounded Vials

The injection label also lists single-dose prefilled syringes, and Ozempic tablets have a label of their own.

  • For Ozempic tablets, the tablet label says to store them "at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F)," in the original bottle "to protect tablets from moisture." Our oral GLP-1 guide compares the pill options.
  • If your Ozempic came as single-dose prefilled syringes, the injection label's 28-day rule applies. "If needed," they "can be stored out of the refrigerator between 46°F to 86°F (8°C to 30°C) for up to 28 days." Keep them in the carton and record the date each one left the fridge.

Compounded semaglutide in vials is not Ozempic, so none of these numbers apply to it. Store it as that pharmacy's label says. But for multi-dose vials, the FDA says to "Discard the vial within 28 days after the first use, even if medication remains in the vial," even if the compounder's instructions say it lasts longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ozempic still good if it was left out of the fridge for 24 hours?

Novo Nordisk's rule is a temperature range plus a deadline. If the pen stayed between 36°F and 86°F and looks clear and colorless, it can be used. After time above 46°F, it must be used or thrown away within 56 days.

When do the 56 days start if my new pen was left out first?

The safest way to count is from the day it was left out, not the day you first inject. That keeps you inside Novo Nordisk's 56-day limit. Write the date on the carton and check it with your pharmacist.

Why do some websites say Ozempic lasts 6 weeks out of the fridge?

That number comes from the European product information: 6 weeks after first use for its four-dose pens and 8 weeks for its eight-dose pens. The U.S. label says 56 days. Follow the label that came with your pen.

Can I use my Ozempic pen after 56 days if there's medicine left?

No. The label says to throw the pen away after 56 days, "even if it still has OZEMPIC left in it." Skipped weeks can leave medicine in the pen on day 56.

What if I already injected from a pen that got too hot or froze?

Don't use that pen again. Novo Nordisk says not to use a pen that was frozen or exposed to more than 86°F. Call your pharmacist or prescriber about your next dose.

Your pharmacist can tell you whether a specific pen is still OK to use.
