How long after DayQuil can you take NyQuil? Neither box tells you. The DayQuil Cold & Flu label spaces DayQuil doses 4 hours apart, and a standard adult dose of either product carries 650 mg of acetaminophen. So your NyQuil counts as your next acetaminophen dose. How far apart NyQuil doses go depends on which NyQuil you bought: 6 hours for Cold & Flu, 4 hours for Severe.
We read every label below on DailyMed, the National Library of Medicine's drug label database, on October 8, 2026, including two combo packs that hold both bottles.
This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. It explains what the product labels say. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes to your medication routine, especially if you take other medicines or have liver disease.
How Many Hours After DayQuil Can I Take NyQuil?
DayQuil Cold & Flu LiquiCaps: "2 LiquiCaps with water every 4 hrs" and "do not exceed 8 LiquiCaps per 24 hrs." NyQuil Cold & Flu LiquiCaps: "2 LiquiCaps with water every 6 hrs," same 8-capsule ceiling.
Each LiquiCap of both products has 325 mg of acetaminophen, the same drug that is in Tylenol. Two capsules is 650 mg either way.
Both labels also carry the same line: "Do not use with any other drug containing acetaminophen (prescription or nonprescription)." Read literally, that line covers DayQuil and NyQuil too. Federal rules require a liver warning on all over-the-counter acetaminophen sold for adults, and it must come first. It names the same risk: liver damage "with other drugs containing acetaminophen."
Many websites say to wait 4 to 6 hours. You won't find that number on the box. Treat the NyQuil as the next dose in the same acetaminophen count, and ask your pharmacist how to space it for your day.
How Often Can You Take NyQuil Severe vs. NyQuil Cold and Flu?
None of the top-ranking answers we read mention this: NyQuil every 6 hours is only true for some boxes.
| Product (adult label) | Acetaminophen per dose | Label spacing | Label daily limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| DayQuil Cold & Flu LiquiCaps or liquid | 650 mg | Every 4 hours | 8 LiquiCaps or 4 doses |
| NyQuil Cold & Flu LiquiCaps or liquid | 650 mg | Every 6 hours | 8 LiquiCaps or 4 doses |
| NyQuil Severe Cold & Flu liquid | 650 mg | Every 4 hours | 4 doses |
| NyQuil HBP Cold & Flu LiquiCaps | 650 mg | Every 4 hours | 8 LiquiCaps |
Sources: labels for DayQuil liquid, NyQuil Cold & Flu liquid, NyQuil Severe and NyQuil HBP. Vicks says HBP is made without a decongestant for people with high blood pressure.
The word "Severe" or "HBP" on the front changes the spacing on the back.
Can You Take DayQuil and NyQuil in the Same Day?
Vicks sells them together. The Cold & Flu combo pack calls itself a "Day & Night Pack." The Severe version holds "1 DayQuil/1 NyQuil." Inside, each bottle has its own Drug Facts panel. Each has its own spacing and its own 4-dose limit.
What the pack does not have is a line that joins the two. Each panel still says not to use it with any other acetaminophen product. Each panel's limit was written as if that bottle were the only one you used.
A 2012 study gave 500 adults real medicine bottles. 45.6% showed they would take two acetaminophen products together and go past the daily maximum. The researchers suggest a likely reason: people may go by what a medicine treats (cold, sleep, pain) more than by what is inside.
The combo pack is made for day-and-night use. If you use both, keep one running total of acetaminophen across both bottles, not two separate counts, and have your pharmacist check it.
Can I Take NyQuil After 4 Doses of DayQuil?
The DayQuil liquid label says "do not exceed 4 doses per 24 hrs," and its liver warning calls that "the maximum daily amount for this product." At 650 mg a dose, that is 2,600 mg.
A NyQuil dose that night adds 650 mg the DayQuil label never counted. That is exactly the case both liver warnings describe: "with other drugs containing acetaminophen."
If you are there, call your pharmacist before the NyQuil, not after. Already took it, and think your total went over? For an overdose, the label says to "get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away." The poison control number is 1-800-222-1222. Our guide on taking too much Tylenol walks through what happens on that call and why feeling fine is not the test.
Can I Take NyQuil Less Than 4 Hours After DayQuil?
None of the labels in the table above allows a shorter gap. Four hours is the shortest spacing on any of them, and it is the gap DayQuil sets between its own acetaminophen doses.
A 2019 diary study of 14,434 adults who use acetaminophen defined "concomitant use" as "taking a second acetaminophen medication within the dosing interval of the first." The authors note this pattern has been linked to going over the daily maximum. Tylenol's maker at the time paid for that study.
Took NyQuil 2 or 3 hours after DayQuil already? Write down both times and amounts, hold off on more acetaminophen until a pharmacist has looked at them, and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if you are unsure. Our doubled-dose guide covers the general triage.
How Long After NyQuil Can I Take DayQuil?
This is the morning version of the question. No label we read sets this gap either. The NyQuil label spaces its own doses every 6 hours for Cold & Flu and every 4 hours for Severe or HBP. A bedtime dose is usually past that by breakfast. It still counts, though. The bedtime NyQuil and the next day's DayQuil share one 24-hour acetaminophen total. Ask your pharmacist how to plan the day after.
The bigger issue the next morning is the other ingredient. NyQuil's sleepy part is doxylamine, an older allergy-type drug called an antihistamine. A standard dose has 12.5 mg. The NyQuil label warns that "marked drowsiness may occur" and says "be careful when driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery."
How long does it hang around? The FDA label for Diclegis, a prescription pill that contains doxylamine, lists a half-life of 12.5 hours. Half-life is the time your body takes to clear half of a drug. That label is for a different product, so use it as a rough guide, not a NyQuil measurement. By that guide, a lot of a bedtime dose is still around at breakfast.
The DayQuil Cold & Flu labels list no antihistamine at all: just acetaminophen, dextromethorphan and phenylephrine. The box says "Non-Drowsy."
Why Am I Groggy the Day After NyQuil?
Two different things can be going on.
The first is the NyQuil itself. MedlinePlus, the National Library of Medicine's drug guide, says people taking doxylamine as a sleep aid should "plan to remain asleep for 7 to 8 hours" and "if you get up too soon after taking doxylamine, you may be drowsy." That page covers doxylamine alone, as a sleep aid. For combination products like NyQuil, it says to read the package label. The NyQuil label warns that "alcohol, sedatives, & tranquilizers may increase drowsiness."
The second has nothing to do with the medicine. Being sick can leave you drained on its own: MedlinePlus lists fatigue among the usual flu symptoms. If you feel just as drained on a day you skipped NyQuil, the illness may be the cause. Also taking a sleep aid or allergy pill? Ask a pharmacist before using it with NyQuil, and check it for diphenhydramine, which our guide to diphenhydramine in the morning covers.
Either way, don't drive groggy. The label's driving line does not come with a timer. If grogginess keeps you from your normal day, mention it to your pharmacist.
When to Stop Taking DayQuil and NyQuil
Sometimes the real question is not "how long do I wait" but "should I still be taking this." Both labels list when to stop and ask a doctor:
- pain or cough gets worse or lasts more than 7 days
- fever gets worse or lasts more than 3 days
- redness or swelling is present
- new symptoms occur
- cough comes back or occurs with rash or headache that lasts
The labels add: "These could be signs of a serious condition." The DayQuil label adds one more: stop and ask a doctor "if you get nervous, dizzy or sleepless." Any of these means it's time to get checked, and switching bottles or adding a third product won't answer it.
Every DayQuil and NyQuil label we read also warns that acetaminophen may cause severe skin reactions (skin reddening, blisters, rash). If one occurs, "stop use and seek medical help right away."
Keeping Track of DayQuil and NyQuil Doses When You're Sick
By day three of a cold, "when did I last take that?" is a real question.
In Pillo, add DayQuil and NyQuil as two separate medications, each with the spacing printed on its box. Dose spacing alerts flag two doses scheduled too close together (a scheduling aid, not a safety check), and your dose history answers the 2 a.m. "did I already?" The persistent alarm keeps nudging until you respond. For the gap between the two bottles, use your pharmacist's answer.
The every 4 hours and every 6 hours schedule guides show how those intervals fall across a day.

FAQ
Can I take NyQuil 3 hours after DayQuil?
No label allows it. DayQuil spaces its own doses 4 hours apart, and NyQuil adds another 650 mg of the same acetaminophen. If you already did, note the times and doses and ask a pharmacist before taking any more acetaminophen that day.
Can you take DayQuil and NyQuil at the same time?
No. Both contain acetaminophen, and each label says not to use it with any other acetaminophen product. Taking them together doubles the acetaminophen in one dose.
What is the difference between DayQuil and NyQuil?
Both have acetaminophen and the cough suppressant dextromethorphan. DayQuil Cold & Flu adds phenylephrine, a decongestant. NyQuil Cold & Flu adds doxylamine, a sleep-causing antihistamine, which is why its label warns that "marked drowsiness may occur."
Can I drive after taking NyQuil?
The NyQuil label warns that "marked drowsiness may occur" and says "be careful when driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery." It gives no time limit. If you still feel groggy, don't drive.
Does NyQuil liquid have alcohol in it?
The NyQuil Cold & Flu liquid label lists alcohol as an inactive ingredient, and the bottle says "Alcohol 10%." If you avoid alcohol, check the label on your specific product.
