Sumatriptan and alcohol have exactly one measured link in the drug's prescribing information. The sumatriptan tablet label reports that "Alcohol consumed 30 minutes prior to sumatriptan ingestion had no effect on the pharmacokinetics of sumatriptan." In plain words, the alcohol did not change how the body absorbed and cleared the pill. Three things can still change the answer for you: whether your pill is Treximet, how drowsy you get, and whether this headache is a migraine at all.
Imitrex is the brand name for sumatriptan. We read seven sumatriptan labels in full, including Treximet, on DailyMed, the National Library of Medicine's drug label database, on October 8, 2026.
This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. It explains what the product labels and published studies say. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before making any changes to your medication routine, and ask them for advice specific to your medications before drinking, especially if you take sumatriptan often or take it with other medicines.
Can Sumatriptan Be Taken With Alcohol?
The alcohol line sits in section 12.3, on pharmacokinetics: how a drug gets into your blood and how fast it leaves. The generic sumatriptan tablet label has the same sentence, so it is not just an Imitrex detail.
The sumatriptan tablet prescribing information does not warn against drinking alcohol; its only alcohol entry is a pharmacokinetic finding in section 12.3.
That one line is useful, but it is narrow:
- It measured drug levels, not pain relief. Whether the migraine still got better is a question this test doesn't answer.
- The alcohol came first. It went in 30 minutes before the pill.
- The study size and the amount of alcohol are left out. All you get is one sentence.
- It covers tablets. The Imitrex injection label mentions alcohol only for the swab you wipe your skin with.
Several top-ranking pages say there is no known or no dangerous interaction, yet none of the ones we read in full on October 8 quoted this line.
If Your Pill Is Treximet (Sumatriptan and Naproxen)
Treximet combines sumatriptan with naproxen, the NSAID pain reliever in Aleve. The Treximet label opens with a boxed warning about serious heart and stomach events. Its stomach bleeding section lists "use of alcohol" as a risk factor, next to smoking, older age, and taking steroids, aspirin, blood thinners or SSRI antidepressants. Its patient guide puts it plainly: the chance of ulcers or bleeding increases with "drinking alcohol."
The over-the-counter naproxen label puts a number on that warning. The Aleve Headache Pain label says the chance of severe stomach bleeding is higher if you "have 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day while using this product." Our Aleve and alcohol guide explains that warning. If you take Treximet, ask your doctor or pharmacist how drinking fits with it.
| Your sumatriptan | What its label says about alcohol | What else matters with a drink |
|---|---|---|
| Tablets (Imitrex or generic) | Alcohol 30 minutes before the tablet did not change sumatriptan levels in the blood | The label lists drowsiness and dizziness |
| Treximet (sumatriptan + naproxen) | Lists "use of alcohol" as a stomach bleeding risk factor | The naproxen half carries the NSAID stomach and heart warnings |
| Imitrex injection | Mentions alcohol only for the skin swab | Also approved for cluster headache, where alcohol is a named trigger (see below) |
| Nasal spray or powder (Tosymra, Onzetra) | Mentions alcohol in no part of the label we read | Approved for migraine only |
Nasal labels: Tosymra and Onzetra, read October 8, 2026. The others are linked above.
If you take plain sumatriptan and add an Aleve or an Advil on the side, that second pill has its own label warnings about alcohol and the stomach. Our Advil and alcohol guide covers ibuprofen, and your pharmacist can check the combination for you.
How Long After Taking Sumatriptan Can I Drink Alcohol?
No sumatriptan label sets a waiting time before you drink. What the label does give is the half-life: "The elimination half-life of sumatriptan is approximately 2.5 hours." A half-life is the time it takes for the amount of drug in your blood to drop by half.
A half-life is not a drinking clock, though. How you feel matters more. The tablet label says sumatriptan "may cause somnolence and dizziness," and its patient guide adds: "If you have these symptoms, do not drive a car, use machinery, or do anything where you need to be alert." MedlinePlus agrees that it "may make you drowsy or dizzy."
Some websites say to wait 4 to 6 hours. We could not trace that number to a label or a study. For a time that fits your dose and your other medicines, ask your pharmacist. Our guide on alcohol and medication timing explains the general picture.
Can You Take Sumatriptan After Drinking Alcohol?
This is the direction the label tested: alcohol 30 minutes before the tablet, and sumatriptan levels did not change. Two questions still come first.
Are you already feeling the drinks? Alcohol "is a central nervous system depressant," according to MedlinePlus, and it "can also affect your coordination." Sumatriptan can add drowsiness and dizziness of its own, so the two can stack. The label's alcohol line reports only blood levels, not drowsiness, so treat the mix as a reason not to drive.
Is this headache a migraine? The tablet label says: "Use only if a clear diagnosis of migraine headache has been established." A headache that starts after a night of drinking may be something else, as the hangover section below explains. And if your pill is Treximet, alcohol use is on its list of stomach bleeding risk factors.
What Happens If You Drink on Sumatriptan?
The most common side effects in the tablet label's clinical trials were tingling, feeling warm or cold, pain, tightness or pressure in the chest, neck, throat or jaw, a spinning feeling (vertigo), and tiredness. For Treximet, the most common side effects in adults included dizziness and sleepiness.
One warning matters no matter what you drank. The patient guide says to stop taking sumatriptan and "get emergency medical help right away" for heart attack symptoms, including "severe tightness, pain, pressure, or heaviness in your chest, throat, neck, or jaw." Don't write chest symptoms off as the drinks.
Can You Drink Wine With Sumatriptan?
For many people the bigger worry is whether the drink brings on the next migraine. The research is more mixed than some websites suggest.
- What people report. In a 2019 survey of 2,197 people with migraine by Onderwater and colleagues, 35.6% named alcoholic drinks as a trigger, red wine most often. But red wine consistently set off an attack in only 8.8%. Triggered attacks started within 3 hours for about a third of people and within 10 hours for almost 90%.
- Daily diaries found less. A 2022 study by Vives-Mestres and colleagues tracked 487 people with episodic migraine across 40,165 diary days. In this group of mostly light drinkers, drinking did not raise the chance of an attack in the next 24 hours. Two authors reported consulting fees and stock options from Curelator Inc., where they work.
- An older 2008 review by Panconesi found about a third of people with migraine say alcohol triggers attacks at least sometimes, but only about 10% say it does so often. Studies that follow people forward in time make it look like a smaller trigger.
Taken together, these studies say alcohol triggers attacks for some people, some of the time. Writing down your own pattern is a simple way to see where you fit.
Can You Take Sumatriptan for a Hangover Headache?
This is where the label's diagnosis rule matters most. Headache experts classify alcohol-induced headache as its own type, separate from migraine. The International Headache Society's classification (ICHD-3) describes two kinds:
- Delayed alcohol-induced headache, the one formerly called "hangover headache." It starts 5 to 12 hours after drinking and goes away on its own within 72 hours.
- Immediate alcohol-induced headache, once called "cocktail headache." It starts within 3 hours of drinking and is much rarer.
The catch: timing alone can't tell these apart from a migraine. In the 2019 survey above, alcohol-triggered migraines started within 3 hours for a third of people and within 10 hours for almost 90%, which overlaps both windows. A small 2025 study of 32 volunteers found hangover headaches often looked migraine-like.
A PubMed search on October 8 turned up no study testing sumatriptan on hangover headaches. If you often wake up with a headache after drinking, ask your doctor ahead of time how to handle it. If you reach for an over-the-counter pill instead, our Excedrin and alcohol guide covers that case.
Sumatriptan Injection and Alcohol in Cluster Headache
Of the seven labels we read, only the Imitrex injection is approved for cluster headache as well as migraine. Its label covers "the acute treatment of cluster headache."
For cluster headache, alcohol is a named trigger. The ICHD-3 entry for cluster headache says that during a cluster period, attacks "occur regularly and may be provoked by alcohol, histamine or nitroglycerin." In chronic cluster headache, that applies at any time. If your injection is for cluster headache, talk with your doctor about drinking during those weeks.
How Pillo Helps
By morning, it's easy to forget when you took last night's dose, and whether you had wine with dinner. Pillo logs each dose with its time, and Dose Notes let you add a line like "two glasses of red." After a few months, the log can show whether drinks tend to come before your attacks.
Its dose history also shows how many days a month you took it. The tablet label warns that using migraine drugs like triptans on 10 or more days a month "may lead to exacerbation of headache," which doctors call medication overuse headache. Pillo is free for unlimited medications, with ads.
FAQ
Can I drink alcohol after taking sumatriptan?
No sumatriptan label sets a waiting time for drinking after a dose. The tablet label does say sumatriptan can cause drowsiness and dizziness, and MedlinePlus says alcohol can affect coordination too. If your pill is Treximet, its label lists alcohol use as a stomach bleeding risk factor.
Does alcohol make sumatriptan less effective?
The label's only alcohol test found that alcohol 30 minutes before a tablet did not change sumatriptan levels in the blood. It did not measure pain relief. A PubMed search on October 8 turned up no study of whether drinking changes how well sumatriptan stops a migraine.
Is Imitrex and alcohol different from sumatriptan and alcohol?
Imitrex is the brand name for sumatriptan, and the brand and generic tablet labels carry the same alcohol sentence. Treximet is different because it also contains naproxen, and its label names alcohol as a stomach bleeding risk factor.
Can you take sumatriptan for a hangover headache?
The sumatriptan tablet label says to use it "only if a clear diagnosis of migraine headache has been established." Headache experts classify a hangover headache as its own type, separate from migraine. A PubMed search on October 8 found no study testing sumatriptan on hangover headaches, so ask your doctor ahead of time how to handle a morning-after headache.
How many days a month can you take sumatriptan?
Using triptans and other acute migraine drugs on 10 or more days a month may make headaches worse, the label warns. It also says the safety of treating more than 4 headaches a month on average has not been established. Your prescriber sets your own limit.
