Wellbutrin Insomnia: Why It Happens and How Long It Lasts

Published
September 30, 2026
Key Takeaways
  • In FDA depression trials, 11% to 16% of people on bupropion SR had insomnia, compared with 6% on placebo.
  • Insomnia seems to follow your drug level, so a dose that lands late in the day is the first thing to review with your prescriber.
  • A morning XL dose leaves lower evening levels than SR, which may mean less insomnia, but the evidence comparing versions is limited.
  • No label or study says how long Wellbutrin insomnia lasts. Report it if it is severe or does not go away.
  • Don't move doses, switch versions, or stop on your own. Insomnia with agitation, panic, or mood changes needs a call to your prescriber right away.

Yes, Wellbutrin (bupropion) can cause insomnia. Trouble sleeping is one of the most common side effects on its FDA label. In depression trials, 11% to 16% of people on bupropion SR had insomnia, compared with 6% on placebo. It seems to follow your drug level, so dose timing is the first thing to review with your prescriber.

The Wellbutrin XL Medication Guide puts it plainly: "If you have trouble sleeping, do not take Wellbutrin XL too close to bedtime." For the other early side effects, see our first week on Wellbutrin guide. This page is about sleep.

Does Wellbutrin Cause Insomnia? What the FDA Trials Show

It does, but not for everyone, and not all of the sleeplessness is the drug. The bupropion labels report each side effect for people on the drug and people on a sugar pill (placebo). The gap between the two is the part you can pin on bupropion.

Trial (version)Insomnia on bupropionInsomnia on placebo

Depression (SR), higher dose group16%6%
Seasonal depression (XL), up to about 6 months20%13%
Depression (original immediate-release)18.6%15.7%
Quitting smoking (SR), dose-range trial31%21%
Quitting smoking (SR), comparison trial40%18%

Sources: Wellbutrin XL label, Tables 3 and 4 (the depression rows come from SR trials), immediate-release label, and bupropion SR smoking-cessation label.

These are separate trials, so compare the two columns within a row, not rows against each other. Each counts anyone who had insomnia at any point in the trial, not just week one.

The higher dose group also slept worse. The smoking-cessation label says the "incidence of dry mouth and insomnia may be related to the dose." Dose is something your prescriber can look at.

Why Does Wellbutrin Keep You Awake?

The label says bupropion inhibits the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine. Bupropion isn't a classic stimulant, but a 2021 report from a VA sleep and psychiatry team says raising those two chemicals "can result in nonspecific stimulation." The authors add that its "alerting effects may disrupt sleep, particularly when a short-acting formulation is administered late in the day."

The key word is "peak." The same report says the stimulating effects "typically coincide with peak (Cmax) plasma concentrations," meaning the hours when the drug level in your blood is highest. A review of 15 years of bupropion data adds that insomnia "has been reported to be correlated with plasma concentrations."

So the real question is where your drug level sits when you're trying to fall asleep.

Wellbutrin XL vs SR vs IR: Which Is Harder on Sleep?

Bupropion comes in three versions. They release the drug at different speeds, which changes how many peaks you get per day and how late the last one lands.

VersionDoses per day (label)Time to peak levelLabel timing rule
XL (extended-release)OnceAbout 5 hours"In the morning"
SR (sustained-release)Once or twiceWithin 3 hoursDoses "at least 8 hours" apart
IR (immediate-release)Two or three timesWithin 2 hoursDoses "at least 6 hours" apart

Sources: Wellbutrin XL label, Wellbutrin SR label, immediate-release label.

The 15-year review explains that a morning XL dose leaves lower blood levels in the evening than SR does, and says this "may result in a lower rate of insomnia." The 2021 VA chart review is the only study we found that compared sleep across the versions. Among 28 veterans starting bupropion for depression, people on SR or IR reported more insomnia than people on XL. The authors assumed bedtime came about 14 hours after the first dose. On that basis, the last dose landed a median of 4.5 hours before bed on IR and 8 hours on SR.

The authors list its limits: it looked back at charts, the group was almost all men, and there was no control group. So it points to a pattern, not proof. Don't switch versions or move doses on your own. If your last dose lands in the evening, ask your prescriber whether the timing or the version could change. For the full timing rules for each version, see the best time to take bupropion.

How Long Does Wellbutrin Insomnia Last?

There is no firm answer. None of the FDA labels or studies we reviewed says how long bupropion insomnia lasts. Plenty of people online say it eased as they adjusted, but no trial we found puts a number of weeks on that.

What the label does show is that for a small group it doesn't ease enough. In the XL seasonal trials, insomnia was the top side effect that made people stop, at 2% versus under 1% on placebo. MedlinePlus lists "difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep" as a side effect to report if it is severe or does not go away.

MedlinePlus also says bupropion may take "4 weeks or longer" to reach its full benefit, so raise rough nights early instead of quitting quietly. Our week-by-week guide to starting antidepressants covers that stretch.

Quitting smoking? Your sleep has two problems

If you take bupropion to stop smoking, look at the placebo column again. In the comparison trial, 18% of people on placebo had insomnia, and 28% on the nicotine patch alone. The label's Medication Guide lists "trouble sleeping" as a nicotine withdrawal symptom. Quitting adds its own sleep trouble on top of the drug's. Tell your prescriber about both.

How to Sleep on Wellbutrin

  1. Check when you actually take it. The XL label says to take it "in the morning." The SR label spaces doses at least 8 hours apart. If a dose keeps drifting into the evening, that's worth fixing with your prescriber.
  2. Keep the same time every day. MedlinePlus says to "take bupropion at around the same time(s) every day." A morning dose that slides to noon pushes the peak hours later.
  3. Never make up a missed dose at night. The label says not to take an extra tablet for a missed dose "because of the dose-related risk of seizure." Read what to do after a missed dose of bupropion, or accidentally took bupropion at night if it already happened.
  4. Cut the other things that keep you up. The NHLBI advises avoiding "caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol close to your bedtime." Its list also includes the same wake time on weekends, daytime exercise at least 5 to 6 hours before bed, and no afternoon naps. Boring, but easy to start tonight.
  5. Bring a sleep record to your next visit. The smoking-cessation label notes insomnia "may be minimized by avoiding bedtime doses" and may be reduced at a lower dose. Those are your prescriber's calls, and a record of what time you dosed and how you slept makes them easier.
  6. If it lasts, ask about CBT-I. The American College of Physicians recommends cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as the first treatment for chronic insomnia in adults. The NHLBI says it usually runs 6 to 8 weeks and can be done in person, by phone, or online.

What Can I Take to Sleep While on Wellbutrin?

Ask your pharmacist before adding anything, including over-the-counter sleep aids and supplements. The NHLBI warns that some over-the-counter medicines, such as certain cold and allergy products, can disrupt sleep. If you're wondering about melatonin, our guide to melatonin and antidepressants explains what to ask first.

Two things to avoid. Don't use a drink to fall asleep. The label says alcohol "should be minimized or avoided" during treatment, and the NHLBI notes alcohol tends to make sleep lighter. More on that in Wellbutrin and alcohol.

And if you already take a sedative or a benzodiazepine for sleep, don't stop it suddenly. The Wellbutrin XL label says bupropion should not be used by people "undergoing abrupt discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and antiepileptic drugs" because of seizure risk. Any change to those medicines goes through your prescriber.

Is It Wellbutrin, or Something Else Keeping You Up?

Plenty of people sleep badly without the drug. Across the depression trials in that table, 6% to 16% of people taking a placebo had insomnia. In the quit-smoking trials, it was about 1 in 5.

Other common culprits are caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol close to bedtime, and some cold or allergy medicines, all named by the NHLBI. A new medicine started around the same time can also be the cause. If your sleep trouble started before bupropion, or didn't change when you started it, tell your prescriber. The fix may be somewhere else.

When Trouble Sleeping on Wellbutrin Is a Warning Sign

Usually, trouble sleeping on bupropion is a side effect, not an emergency. But insomnia is also on the label's short list of early warning signs, so context matters.

Wellbutrin carries a boxed warning: antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults in short-term trials. That increase wasn't seen in adults 65 and older, and people of every age should be watched closely when starting. The label asks families to watch for "anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, akathisia (psychomotor restlessness), hypomania, and mania," especially in the first few months and after dose changes.

This applies whether you take bupropion for depression or to quit smoking. The smoking-cessation label also warns that "serious neuropsychiatric adverse events have been reported" in people taking it to stop smoking.

Call your prescriber right away if trouble sleeping comes with:

  • New or worse depression, anxiety, panic attacks, or agitation
  • Feeling very restless, irritable, angry, or acting on dangerous impulses
  • Greatly increased energy, racing thoughts, or talking more or faster than usual. The Medication Guide lists these, along with "severe trouble sleeping," as possible signs of mania.

If you have thoughts of suicide or harming yourself, call or text 988 (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) now, or call 911. If you have a seizure, the Medication Guide says to stop the tablets and call your healthcare provider right away. Call 911 if someone is seizing.

How Pillo Helps

Dose timing is the lever here, and timing is what slips. Pillo's persistent alarm keeps going until you respond, so your morning dose happens in the morning instead of at 4 p.m. when you finally remember. If you take SR twice a day, Pillo's dose spacing alerts flag doses scheduled too close together.

Pillo's health trackers include sleep and mood, and you can add a dose note like "took it at 9 a.m., up until 2 a.m." Bring that record to your next visit. Pillo is free for unlimited medications, with ads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Wellbutrin cause insomnia if taken in the morning?

It can. Wellbutrin XL is labeled for morning use, and in its seasonal depression trials 20% of people on XL had insomnia versus 13% on placebo. A morning dose may lower the odds, but it doesn't remove them. If you still can't sleep, tell your prescriber.

Can Wellbutrin cause vivid dreams?

Sometimes, but not often. In the XL seasonal trials, abnormal dreams were reported by 3% on XL and 2% on placebo. In a quit-smoking trial, dream changes were 5% on bupropion SR, 18% on the nicotine patch, and 3% on placebo.

Can caffeine make Wellbutrin insomnia worse?

The Wellbutrin labels don't list caffeine as a drug interaction. Caffeine can still keep you up on its own. The NHLBI advises avoiding "caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol close to your bedtime." An afternoon coffee is an easy first cut.

Should I stop Wellbutrin if I can't sleep?

Not on your own. MedlinePlus says, "Do not stop taking bupropion without talking to your doctor." Tell your prescriber about the insomnia instead. Timing, version, and dose are all things they can review.

Will Wellbutrin keep me awake if I take it at night?

It might. The Medication Guide says not to take it "too close to bedtime" if you have trouble sleeping, and the XL label calls for morning dosing. If you took it at night by mistake, read accidentally took bupropion at night. Never take an extra tablet to make up for a dose.
