If you missed a Humira dose, inject it as soon as you remember, then go back to your regular injection day. That is the rule in the FDA label for Humira (adalimumab). To be safe, if your next shot is only a few days away, or you are a month or more late, call your pharmacist or prescriber before you inject.
Humira is forgiving because it lasts. Its half-life is about 2 weeks (10 to 20 days across studies), so the drug does not vanish the day a shot is due. The Medication Guide says the catch-up shot "will put you back on schedule." It also says: "Do not miss any doses of HUMIRA unless your doctor says it is okay." A few days late is a small dip. A habit of late shots is the real problem.

Humira Missed Dose Instructions in the US, Canada, UK and New Zealand
Same drug, four official sources, and they split on one moment: remembering close to your next shot.
| Leaflet | When you remember | If your next shot is close |
|---|---|---|
| US (FDA label) | Inject as soon as you remember, then take your next dose at your regular scheduled time | Same rule, no extra line |
| Canada (Health Canada monograph) | Inject as soon as you remember, then the next dose on the originally scheduled date | Same rule, no extra line |
| UK (NHS) | Do it as soon as you remember, then the next injection when it's due | "Ask your care team for advice" |
| New Zealand (Medsafe leaflet) | Inject as soon as you remember, then your next dose on your originally scheduled day | "Skip the dose you missed" |
Sources: FDA label, Health Canada product monograph, NHS, Medsafe consumer leaflet.
The US Humira label has no rule about skipping a late dose when your next one is close. The UK and New Zealand cover that moment and give two different answers. Remember two days before your next shot? Make a phone call, not a guess. The US Medication Guide agrees: "In case you are not sure when to inject HUMIRA, call your doctor or pharmacist." The UK and New Zealand leaflets also say not to take two injections to make up for a missed one.
Humira Half-Life and How Much Is Left When You're Late
Your Humira level is lowest right before each shot. Call that your usual low point. When you are late, it keeps sliding below that, by about half every 2 weeks (the half-life in the label).
The rough math, using the label's 10 to 20 day range:
| How late your shot is | Rough level vs your usual low point |
|---|---|
| 1 day | About 3% to 7% lower |
| 3 days | About 10% to 19% lower |
| 1 week | About 22% to 38% lower |
| 2 weeks (a whole dose skipped) | About 38% to 62% lower |
| 4 weeks | About 62% to 86% lower |
This is simple half-life math, not a blood test. It does not tell you when symptoms will return, and real levels vary. In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the label notes that people with antibodies to the drug tended to clear it faster.
Our guide on what to do if you missed a dose of medication explains why long-lasting drugs forgive a late dose. Other long-gap shots have their own math, like how late you can get a Prolia shot or a missed Abilify Maintena injection.
Missed Humira Dose by a Day (or a Few Days)
This is the case the label's rule was built for. Say you inject every other Sunday and you remember on Monday. Inject Monday. Your next shot stays on your usual Sunday, two weeks after the one you missed.
Three days late is still a modest dip, but check your schedule. If you take Humira every week, three days late puts your next shot only four days away. That is the close call where the leaflets disagree, so call your pharmacist first.
Missed Humira Dose by a Week
If you take Humira every other week and you are a week late, the label's rule still applies: inject now, then go back to your usual day. Your next two shots land 7 days apart instead of 14.
A 7-day gap is not new territory for Humira. The label lists 40 mg every week as an option for some adults with RA who don't take methotrexate, and as a regular schedule for adults with hidradenitis suppurativa. That does not mean a short gap is right for you, and it only compares to adults on 40 mg every other week. If you take a different dose, give a child's shots, or the short gap worries you, ask your pharmacist first.
If you take Humira every week, a week late means your next shot is already due. Do not inject twice: the NHS and New Zealand leaflets both warn against it. Call your pharmacist or prescriber.
Missed Humira Dose by a Month
A month late on an every-other-week schedule means two missed shots. The table puts your level well under half its usual low point. Call your prescriber before your next shot with the date of your last one and how you feel.
A 2021 review of psoriasis trials found that stopping adalimumab or several other biologics once, then restarting, had no significant impact on skin clearance rates. Ask how that applies to your condition.
Can Missed Humira Doses Cause Antibodies?
Humira is a protein, and some immune systems make antibodies against it. A 2011 study that followed 272 people with RA for 3 years found that 28% made antibodies to adalimumab. Only 4% of them reached lasting remission, compared with 34% of people without antibodies.
Stop-start use seems to raise the odds. A 2017 systematic review in BioDrugs found people on continuous adalimumab were less likely to make antibodies than people treated on and off. A 2015 study of 53 people with psoriasis linked treatment breaks to higher antibody levels. In its RA studies, the FDA label adds that people on Humira alone every other week may make antibodies more often than people dosing weekly.
These studies looked at stop-start treatment and low levels over months, not one late shot. The label's psoriasis data even found the antibody rate after stopping and restarting was similar to before. In a 2023 study of 608 people with IBD on self-injected biologics like adalimumab, people who filled fewer doses on time had more ER visits and IBD hospital stays.
Missed Humira Because of a Misfire or Prior Authorization Delay?
Plenty of late shots have nothing to do with forgetting.
If your pen misfired, leaked or was wasted, call your pharmacist before you use another pen. For a leak of more than a few drops, Humira's Instructions for Use say to call 1-800-4HUMIRA (1-800-448-6472) for help. Ask about a replacement too.
If your shipment is late, call your specialty pharmacy that day and ask what's holding it up: a refill that needs your doctor's OK, a prior authorization, an insurance change or shipping. If it is paperwork, call your prescriber's office the same day. Our guides on running out before a refill and when the pharmacy is out of your medication walk through those calls.
When the pen arrives, the usual rule applies: inject, then go back to your regular day. If it lands close to your next shot, or you are a month or more behind, call first.
Do Adalimumab Biosimilars Like Hyrimoz, Amjevita and Hadlima Use the Same Missed Dose Rule?
Yes. Biosimilars are other adalimumab products, each with its own FDA label, and we read ten of them. The ten are Hyrimoz (adalimumab-adaz), Amjevita (adalimumab-atto), Hadlima (adalimumab-bwwd), Cyltezo, Yusimry, Hulio, Idacio, Yuflyma, Simlandi and Abrilada. All of them use Humira's missed-dose wording: inject as soon as you remember, then take your next dose at your regular scheduled time.
If your pharmacy switched you to one of these ten, your missed-dose rule stayed the same. Your pen may differ, so follow its own instructions.
Took Humira Early by Mistake?
An early shot puts two doses closer together than planned. The Medication Guide says: "If you take more HUMIRA than you were told to take, call your doctor." Call, and ask which day your next shot should be. Do not skip or move it on your own. For how extra doses compare across drug types, see taking medication twice by mistake.
Fever After a Missed Humira Dose? It May Not Be a Flare
When you feel worse after a missed shot, a flare is the obvious guess. But Humira carries a boxed warning for serious infections, and some infection signs look like a flare. The Medication Guide's list includes fever, sweats or chills, muscle aches, cough, diarrhea or stomach pain, and feeling very tired. With Crohn's or ulcerative colitis, diarrhea and stomach pain can pass for a flare. With RA, tiredness and even fever can.
This changes the catch-up shot. The Medication Guide says: "After starting HUMIRA, call your doctor right away if you have an infection, or any sign of an infection." Have a fever or other infection signs? Call your doctor before the missed dose. Our risk-level guide covers which medications matter most when skipped.
How Pillo Helps
A shot every other week gets none of the daily repetition a pill does. In a 2016 study of 128 people with IBD, people on adalimumab were much more likely to fall behind on refills than people on infliximab infusions. Pillo handles schedules that are not daily, and its alarm keeps going until you deal with it. Your dose history shows the date of your last shot, which is the first thing your pharmacist will ask.
Refill reminders flag your supply before you run out, so you can call the specialty pharmacy early. Giving a child's Humira shots? Add them as a dependent (free for up to two dependents), and the alarm rings on your phone. More on why we built a pill reminder that won't stop.
FAQ
How many days late can you take Humira?
The US label says to inject as soon as you remember, then return to your regular day. To be safe, if your next shot is a few days away, or it has been a month or more, call your pharmacist or prescriber first.
Can you take Humira every 3 weeks instead of every 2?
Only your prescriber can change your schedule. For most conditions, the label's usual adult schedule is every other week after any starting doses. On-and-off treatment has been linked to antibodies, so ask before you stretch the gap.
Do I need to restart Humira's starting doses after a long gap?
Ask your prescriber. Some conditions start Humira with larger doses. Whether you need them again after a gap is their call.
Is a missed Humira dose an emergency?
One late shot usually is not. Humira's half-life is about 2 weeks, so a few days late is a small dip. Call your doctor right away if you have a fever, other signs of infection, or symptoms getting worse fast.
Will one missed Humira dose make it stop working?
Antibodies to Humira are linked to a weaker response. The antibody studies we reviewed looked at stop-start treatment over months, not one late shot. The label's psoriasis data found antibody rates after stopping and restarting were similar to before. Tell your doctor if symptoms come back.
