Is BPC-157 Legal? What the 2026 FDA Vote Did and Didn't Do

Published
October 2, 2026
Key Takeaways
  • BPC-157 is not FDA-approved, and the FDA says no approved BPC-157 product exists in any country.
  • It is not on the FDA's list of ingredients compounding pharmacies may use, and USADA says there is currently no legal basis to include it in any compounded medication.
  • An FDA advisory committee voted 8 to 6 in July 2026 to recommend adding it, but the vote is not binding and no rule had been published as of October 2, 2026.
  • BPC-157 is banned in sport at all times under WADA class S0, on both the 2026 and 2027 lists.
  • A "research use only" label does not make it legal, according to the FDA and Health Canada.

BPC-157 is not FDA-approved for any human use. It is also not on the list of ingredients US compounding pharmacies may use. An FDA advisory committee voted in July 2026 to recommend adding it, though FDA staff had advised against it. A vote is not a rule. It is banned in sport at all times.

What is BPC-157? A 2025 review calls it Body Protective Compound-157: a lab-made peptide (a short chain of 15 amino acids) "originally isolated from gastric juice," the fluid in your stomach.

We checked every regulator page below on October 2, 2026. This status is still moving.

Is BPC-157 FDA Approved?

No. In its July 2026 briefing, the FDA wrote that "there is no approved product containing BPC-157-related BDSs [bulk drug substances] in any country at this time." The US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) says the same: BPC-157 is not approved for human clinical use by the FDA "or any other global health authority."

BPC-157 FDA Status: What Changed in 2026

BPC-157 left "Category 2" because the nominators withdrew it, and FDA's page still lists its potential safety risks. FDA will not make a final decision on the list until all reviews are done.

Can a Compounding Pharmacy Make BPC-157?

Not under current rules, as far as the public record shows. Under FDA's 503A rules, a pharmacy can compound from an ingredient in only three cases. It has an official USP monograph, it is part of an FDA-approved drug, or it is on FDA's 503A list. The FDA briefing says BPC-157 has no monograph and is not part of any approved drug. It is not on the list.

USADA, in a page updated August 10, 2026, says: "Currently, there is no legal basis to include BPC-157 in any compounded medication." FDA adds substances to the list through notice-and-comment rulemaking.

The Department of Defense's Operation Supplement Safety program states that "BPC-157 is not a dietary ingredient. It is an unapproved drug and cannot be legally prescribed or sold over the counter."

A "research use only" label did not stop the FDA from treating BPC-157 as a drug. A 2023 FDA warning letter covered injectable and nasal BPC-157 sold with "research purpose only" labels. The FDA said the products were "intended to be drugs for human use" and called them unapproved new drugs.

Is BPC-157 Banned in Sports?

Yes. BPC-157 is named in class S0 (non-approved substances) on the 2026 WADA Prohibited List, banned in and out of competition. WADA published its 2027 list on September 21, 2026, to take effect January 1, 2027. The 2027 list still names BPC-157, and WADA's explanatory note says peptides are now named as examples in that class.

USADA says a therapeutic use exemption for BPC-157 is unlikely to be approved. It is also on the DoD's prohibited list for service members. If another program tests you, check that program's list.

Is BPC-157 Safe for Humans? What Is Known

Not enough to say. FDA found five small, short clinical studies. None gave BPC-157 by mouth, by injection under the skin, by nose or on the skin. It concluded there is "insufficient clinical safety information." Its adverse event search through December 2025 found three reports, with unclear cause. FDA also flagged possible immune reactions and impurity concerns in compounded versions.

A 2025 review agreed: "human data are extremely limited," and BPC-157 "should be considered investigational."

FAQ

Is BPC-157 a controlled substance in the US?

No. It is not on the DEA's list of controlled substances (version dated August 27, 2026). That does not make it approved: the FDA has not approved any BPC-157 product.

Did the FDA approve BPC-157 in July 2026?

It did not. News reports say an FDA advisory committee voted 8 to 6 on July 23, 2026 to recommend adding BPC-157 to the list pharmacies may compound from. FDA staff had advised against it. The vote is not binding, and as of October 2, 2026 no rule had been published.

Can a doctor prescribe BPC-157 in the US?

The DoD's Operation Supplement Safety program says BPC-157 "cannot be legally prescribed or sold over the counter." It is also not on FDA's compounding list.

Can athletes get a medical exemption for BPC-157?

USADA says a therapeutic use exemption is unlikely to be approved because permitted alternatives exist. Sport Integrity Australia says an exemption would not be granted for any medical condition.

Does a "research use only" label make BPC-157 legal?

Regulators say no. The FDA has treated "research use only" BPC-157 as an unapproved drug when it was marketed for people. Health Canada says the label does not make a product legal.
